With Cypher badly injured and confined to making emotional faces in a space chair, his scared straight son sets out to find a beacon that will get them a rescue ride home. Kitai experiences his own improvised soldier training from his father when a ship they are riding in makes a crash landing on Earth, leaving them the only survivors. In the world of After Earth, this is called “ghosting.” Cypher is the rare soldier who can fight the fear-smelling alien creatures without fear. As a young soldier in training, Kitai lives in the shadow of his father’s myth.
Learning about this sad reality is young Kitai (Jaden Smith), the son of famous general Cypher Raige (Will Smith). Humans now live on a planet where they can get their asses kicked by alien creatures who can literally smell our fear. Earth itself became a quarantined rock in the galaxy, with toxins and creatures that have evolved to hate human beings. Yeah, just like we did in Tom Cruise’s own enviro-guilt odyssey Oblivion from last month, we bungled planet Earth with all our clumsy human-ness and had to pack up our sleeping bags and get our asses to space. Understandably, Eric doesn’t welcome him home with open arms.In the distant future, we screwed up again (don’t look at me, I recycle). Jack worked for Eric before, and in fact, left him high-and-dry when he skipped town. The worst of his encounters, while looking for his wife, is with criminal gang leader Eric (Clay Wilcox). Jack’s tough as nails, though it takes a few raw experiences for that to become clear. Jack is not a hero in this tale, but he’s the closest thing we’ve got. Things are so restrictive that there’s even a DNA test to verify she’s the right person. It could also be because the visa was for both of them, so the emigration authority won’t let Jack travel without Vanessa. We are left to wonder whether he’s back in the hope of rekindling a new life with his beloved in another place. While Jack’s away, years later, the visa comes through, and that’s when he comes back to L.A. He left during the hardest of times, shortly after the couple applied for but never received their emigration visa. “… life on Earth is a terrible slog and the best hope is to escape on a transport spaceship to an off-world colony…” The DMV-like government office of Extraplanetary Emigration is a place of agony and ecstasy. Only a chosen few are fortunate enough to make that trip.
